Upper Elementary
Grades 4-6

Linocut Printmaking
Students learned the basics of printmaking. They learned how to compose their image, how to transfer their image onto the linocut, how to hold and use the different cutting tools, how to properly apply the ink to create an image. They each chose an animal native to Minnesota.

Watercolor
Students learned in previous years to paint watercolors with oil pastels to help them stay inside the lines. During our lessons, we learned how to do a wash, and how to "cut an edge" to help them stay inside their lines. We also learned wet-on-wet and wet-on-dry painting techniques, and experimented with masking fluid

Students drew either a flower or seashells from life, then used paint to make it impressionistic.

Oil Pastels
Students had been using oil pastels like crayons, so we did a lesson on how to blend your oil pastels to create a more painterly effect. They started with two excersizes and then did their own pastel paintings.

Gridding
Students learned how to use the grid system to enlarge an object. They each picked their own reference image, and had to alter it in some way. Then we colored them in with oil pastels to help reinforce their technique.

Roman Mosaic
Students learned the rules and techniques for making Ancient Roman mosaics. Students practiced with paper tiles, and they are currently working on creating a mosaic with authentic stone tesserae. This student shows great understanding of the line techniques that romans used to outline their shapes and create curvy lines with square tiles.

Sketching
Students did a series of still life sketches in class, training their eyes to stay on the object and also training them to simplify the image first and then add detail second. After, we took a field trip to Marjorie McNeely Conservatory to sketch the things we saw!

Upper Elementary Play
This year the students could not choose between Midsummer Nights Dream, and a kabuki style play. So they went with both! We kept the traditional story from Midsummer Night's Dream, but changed the names and identities of the characters, and styled the set as if it were a Shakespeare-Kabuki hybrid! During this time, I demonstrate the skills they need, offer advice, and supervise their work, but I do not touch any of the set pieces. I believe that the art should be 100% theirs.

Plaster Masks

Students work with paris craft to cast eachothers faces. They will then paint there masks in such a way that will symbolize who they are.
