Lower Elementary

Grades 1-3

Oil Pastel Resist

Students created paintings using the oil pastel resist method. We read a story together, and students used their imaginations to illustrate their favorite part of the story. Of course, everyone's favorite part was the volcano scene. But it's interesting to see how each child interpreted the volcanoes differently!

Self Portraits
Students learned about facial proportions and how to create a good likeness.

Color Wheel
Students were given the three primary colors, and were instructed to find as many in-between colors as they could. They made swatches, which they then cut out into a shape of their choice and arranged on a color wheel

Clay Relief Tiles
Students each picked their own animals to depict on clay tiles. They drew their animals and transferred their drawings to pre-shaped squares of clay via sgraffito, then used the carving tools to carve the space around their animals. The challenge was to carve just enough away so that their animal stood out, without carving too far to poke a hole. They were able then to add details, and glaze their tiles.

Batik
This was a tricky lesson to do with younger children, mainly because of the hot wax. I did not want them to be in danger of burns. I wound up soldering some metal bits and wooden handles onto cookie cutters, which allowed students to dip them in the hot wax without putting their hands anywhere near the pots! They then dyed their fabric in two different layers. I love how colorful they turned out!

Weaving
Students designed patterns and used cardboard looms to weave tapestries. This lesson was so successful, each of the 12 students who chose this residency wound up teaching a friend how to weave!

Open Studio
Students plan their own projects based on what they are learning about in class. Each one is so different!!!
